But, there are some other companies out there doing other remarkable things to make PR and marketing more effective and painless. When we find them, we like to share. So, we’re happy to introduce you to Buzzsumo.

What does it do?

Buzzsumo is an online resource that finds the most frequently shared content across all the major social networks. Users can search for a topic and instantly see the most shared content across Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, and Pinterest. Advanced search lets you narrow down the results by timeframe, content type, domain, or author. Pro accounts also provide alerts, content analysis, competitive analysis and downloadable data.

Buzzsumo also provides information on the influencers who are sharing content. For any topic, you can see influencers with the most followers, and the highest domain and page authority. Not only that, but you get details about how frequently their tweets are retweeted and some information about the makeup of their posts.

Why is it Awesome?

Buzzsumo is a great way to get a feel for what is popular and trending in your space. You can then develop a content strategy to cover similar topics, use popular content types, and even craft headlines like those that are catching on. Getting a feel for the most popular content by authors of interest will help you align your pitches with what has worked well for them before. All authors want their content to be broadly shared, so congratulating them on their best preforming content can’t hurt. Perhaps the influencer information is the most powerful of all. It makes it easy to identify people you should develop relationships with, or at least follow.

How Much is It?

The great news is that a lot of the functionality is available for free. You can go try it out right now. Some of the advanced features, such as alerts and content analysis require a subscription, but they start at just $99 a month, so it won’t break the bank.

Buzzsumo is not a substitute for advanced media monitoring and PR tracking software, it is focused only on the major social media networks, not the broader media landscap, but, it is a great extension to help you get a handle on what’s hot on social, who’s writing it and who’s sharing it. #trending
